Dyno Nobel employees focus on safety
both on and off the job
“Over the top” is the way one attendee described Dyno Nobel Americas’ 2007 Health, Safety, and Environment & Quality (HSEQ) Conference held in San Antonio, Texas, U.S.A. on February 20 - 22. Attendance hit an all time high with 285 Dyno Nobel employees from North America participating in the three-day event that focused on Dyno Nobel’s number 1 priority – Safety. The Conference theme - “Safely Home. Everyone. Everyday.” - reinforced the importance of taking personal responsibility for individual safety and also for the safety of colleagues.
On the day prior to the official opening of the Conference, a Hazardous Waste Operation and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) training session was held and members of the San Antonio Fire Department joined the session to review Hazard and Risk Assessment and emergency procedures in the event of a trucking and plant incidents / accidents.
Attendees traveled by bus to the San Antonio Fire Department Training Academy for an afternoon of hands-on training in spill control, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as well as decontamination, risk assessment, and to discuss possible environmental issues. On display was Dyno Nobel’s West Region Emergency Response trailer and a bulk truck from one of DNAs’ joint ventures.
Dyno Nobel Americas President Lars Johansen officially kicked off the Conference applauding DNA employees for their contribution to 2006, the safest year in DNAs’ history.
The Conference was a mix of general and breakout sessions. Participants could choose to attend sessions on various HSEQ topics including Blasting Incident Review, Hot Works Permits/PPE Hazard Assessment, Ergonomics/Occupational Health, Safe Production, Stress & Safety, Body Dynamics, Keeping You Legal, Job Safety Analysis, Blasting Safety and ICARUS training. In addition, there were regulatory compliance updates from representatives from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (BATF), and the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA).
The growth and diversity of Dyno Nobel was highlighted through presentations on various sites that included: Donora, East Region, Dyno Nobel Canada and Buckley Powder Company. In addition, Josue Cuevas gave us a look at the Dinamita facility in Mexico that has been in business for 74 years.
One highlight of the session was the Fun Run/Walk that was organized to support Dyno Nobel’s commitment to the health and wellness of our employees. The run/walk was a huge success with 200 of the 285 attendees participating in the three-mile walk/run.
The Conference culminated with the annual Awards Banquet. Over 20 blasting awards were presented to sites that have been flyrock free during 2006 and the Excellence in Safety Awards were given to 16 locations in the U.S. and Mexico for meeting strict safety criteria.
