ISEE 33rd Annual Conference on Explosives & Blasting Technique

Dyno Nobel Americas presents 3 technical papers and showcases 2 new products

This year's International Society of Explosives Engineers' 33rd Annual Conference on Explosives & Blasting Technique attracted the largest attendance in the conference history with nearly 1800 gathered in Nashville, Tennessee for the Blasters Weekend and subsequent Conference which ran from 26 - 31 January.

From the podium to the exhibition floor, Dyno Nobel employees were busy renewing old friendships, attending technical presentations and hosting customer appreciation events, as well as promoting our new dynamite - DynomaxTM Pro, or new Super EZ Connector and our new, super accurate, nonelectric delay detonator - NONEL® Super.

The whirlwind of activities began with the Blasters Weekend, followed by a regulatory (ATF, DOT and NRC) panel discussion.  Dyno Nobel sponsored the popular Blasters R Us Video Roundup held prior to the opening of the general session (kicked off by keynote speaker Michael J. Sullivan - Active Director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives for the U.S. Department of Justice).

More than 90 technical papers were presented at the Conference on a variety of subjects - from practical aspects of blasting technique to helpful ideas on safety and productivity to cost effective use of explosives.

  • Larry Mirabelli (DynoConsult), a member of the ISEE Conference Program Committee, chaired the Productivity session and had the pleasure to introduce two Dyno Nobel papers that were co-authored with customer personnel:
    • Factors Driving Continuous Blasting Improvement at the LaFarge Ravena Plant was co-authored by Robert Ethier and David Bremer (LaFarge) and David Lilly (DynoConsult).
    • Maumee Quarry Drilling and Blasting Challenge was co-authored by Lee Wehner (StoneCo-Oldcastle material), Daryl Kin (Northern Ohio Explosives/Wampum Hardware) and John Bolger (Dyno Nobel consultant).
  • Tom Barkley (DNA West Region) chaired the session on Electronic Dets and introduced Keith Maki (DNA West Region) who gave a presentation entitled Digital Detonators in Iron Ore.
  • Keith Henderson (DNA West Region) participated on a panel discussing Successful Community Relations Strategies in the Public Relations Workshop.

Other sessions of interest held during the Conference included presentation sessions on Safety & Health, Vibration, Fragblast, Security & Regulations and a Risk Assessment Workshop.

In addition to the technical sessions, there were more than 140 exhibitors from all over the world.  The Dyno Nobel booth attracted customers, suppliers, distributors and other explosives users interested in our explosives products and blasting solutions including Dynomax Pro and NONEL Super EZ Det / MS using the Super EZ Connector.

The 2008 ISEE 34th Annual Conference will be held in New Orleans from January 27 - 30.  Great interest in explosives products and their application continues at high levels so the Conference will surely draw another enthusiastic crowd.
