Six Plants

The acquisition of three additional ammonium nitrate manufacturing facilities in 2003 has increased Dyno Nobel's manufacturing capacity to nearly one million tons of ammonium nitrate (AN) prill and ammonium nitrate solution (ANSOL). Facilities are located in Louisiana, Missouri (LOMO);  Donora, Pennsylvania; Cheyenne, Wyoming; Battle Mountain, Nevada; and St. Helens, Oregon. As well as Dyno Nobel Nitrogen in Maitland, Ontario. In addition, Dyno Nobel also produces a variety of acid blends and urea-based products.

Reliable Supply

With plants located across the US, and with contractual supply agreements with other AN manufacturers, Dyno Nobel has invested heavily to ensure an uninterrupted supply of ammonium nitrate to support its distributor network and to meet the growing needs of its customers.

Emulsion Compatibility

The ammonium nitrate that Dyno Nobel manufactures and purchases is compatible with Dyno Nobel emulsion technology.

Ammonium Nitrate4

Ammonium Nitrate

Dyno Nobel Ammonium Nitrate prills are industrial grade and specifically designed to be used as a solid oxidizer ingredient for explosive compositions such as ANFO, WR ANFO, Heavy ANFO Emulsion and Watergels. They are small-sized, low-moisture content, non-setting, porous spheres (prills) that have an average diameter range between 0.055 to 0.078 in (1.4 to 2.0mm). The particle density of the prills is such that, when liquid fuel is properly applied to and mixed with them, the prills absorb the fuel uniformly which enhances reactivity.

Dyno Nobel Ammonium Nitrate is available in bulk by railcar or truck.

Ammonia4

Ammonia - Commercial Grade

AMMONIA is a colorless gas shipped under pressure as a liquid. It has a pungent characteristic odor that is highly irritating to the mucosal membranes of the eyes and lungs. Contact with the liquid can cause frostbite. It absorbs readily into water to form alkaline ammonium hydroxide solution which is corrosive to bodily tissue.

Application Recommendations

  • AMMONIA is intended for use as a fertilizer
  • AMMONIA is corrosive to aluminum tin, copper, lead, silver, zinc and their alloys.
  • A spill of 100 pounds or more is a reportable release pursuant to CERCLA Section 311(b)(4) of the Clean Water Act.
  • Consult MSDS #1129 for more specific and comprehensive information about chemical hazards.

Aqua Ammonia (Ammonium Hydroxide or Aqueous Ammonia)

AQUA AMMONIA, aqueous ammonia and ammonium hydroxide are synonymous terms referring to a solution of ammonia in water.  Aqua is a high purity solution produced using demineralized water and is suitable for applications that require low levels of trace minerals.  This product is used in stack emission control systems to neutralize sulfur oxides from combustion of sulfur-containing fuels and as a method of NOx control in both catalytic and non-catalytic applications.  It is also used for ph control, nutrient for waste disposal systems and wood treating.

Urea4

Urea Prill 46-0-0

UREA PRILL is a small diameter, spherical white solid.  It is an organic amide molecule containing 46% nitrogen in the form of amine groups.  UREA is infinitely soluble in water and is suitable for use as an agricultural and forestry fertilizer as well as for industrial applications which require a high quality nitrogen source.  It is not a poison to mammals and birds and is a benign and safe chemical to handle.

Nitric Acid4

Nitric Acid - Industrial Grade 53% - 60%

NITRIC ACID is created by reacting nitric oxide and nitrogen dioxide with water in an absorber tower.  The NITRIC ACID will not contain any ions unless they were present in the water source used for absorbing the acid gas.  Dyno Nobel uses clean condensate as their water source. The acid is clear an colorless to 53%, but develops a yellow color at higher concentrations due to dissolved nitrogen dioxide gas.  The product can be made colorless by adding hydrogen peroxide or by sparging with air to displace the nitrogen dioxide.  This acid is miscible with water in all portions accompanied with a rise in temperature.

Nitric Acid - Strong - Low Oxide 98%

NITRIC ACID is created by oxidizing anhydrous ammonia over a platinum catalyst at extreme tremperatures. 98% NITRIC ACID is produced by concentrating 56% NITRIC ACID in a distillation column with the aid of magnesium nitrate as a dehydrating agent. The resulting very pure product is highly concentrated, free of sulfates and chlorides and contains a low concentration of dissolved oxides.
