Precision Timing Electronic Detonators That Perform. When it comes to blasting systems and commercial explosives, it is imperative to have a system that is accurate and reliable for better blast control. At Dyno Nobel, we specialize in providing electronic DET products that deliver all of the above. Regardless of the project size or scope, the application of our solutions to your project requirements will get the job done. In order to achieve these results we utilize our DigiShot electronic DET system for smaller blasts in surface and underground mining. DIGISHOT® is a high quality initiation system used for precision blasting required in underground and surface mining applications. It is easy to use, and delivers accurate timing. Some components of this system, include: Precision Timing Electronic Det. Providing excellent control over blasting operations, this two wire programmable initiation device provides accurate delay timing for better control. Rugged Over-extruded Downline Wire. This wire is cut and abrasion resistant for better communication between the Tagger and detonator. The entire assembly of the wire is resistant to water, stray current and ESD. Blast Friendly Tagger. This hand-held and lightweight DigiShot Tagger allows minimum keystrokes to be used when assigning a blast hole/detonator location. It is useful for testing single detonators, a blast pattern or the entire circuit during on-the-bench operations. Step-by-step menu instructions are provided to help the blaster easily conduct operations on-bench. Easy-to-Use Blaster. Firing a blast with the desired timing has never been easier. The DigiShot Blaster is able to program and fire a blast within the delayed timeframe desired. The timing of the blast can be entered on any day prior to the day of the blast or on blast-day itself – giving the user flexibility of planning and operations. Up to 300 detonations can be fired remotely at a distance of 1.5 km (4921 ft.). Delay firing options can be viewed and chosen through easy-to-use menu screens. For larger shots and when firing in hardwire mode, blasting boxes can be synchronized. The box itself is smart key and password protected and uses an encrypted signal for firing the blast.

A Brief History Of Dynamite: As the only current manufacturer and producer of dynamite in the United States, Dyno Nobel is uniquely positioned to provide all of your blasting needs. While we do offer a wide range of different blasting options, including non-dynamite explosives, the traditional explosive power and control offered by this explosive are still considered the best for many operations. Dynamite, when handled and stored correctly, is a very stable and dependable option. There are strict requirements for its storage, transportation and use and our staff are always available to assist our customers with any questions on any aspect of this explosive. The Early Beginnings: The actual demand for a stronger and more stable blasting option than black powder and nitroglycerin is what led to the invention of dynamite. It was first patented by Alfred Nobel in England on May 7, 1867, and he also applied for a patent in Sweden in October of the same year. Since the actual formulation of the explosive was the patent, it was very difficult for other companies to start production. By varying the original formula developed by Alfred Nobel, different formulations developed, particularly in the United States. The goal of the inventor to develop a stable, effective and predictable option for blasting through rock is still what drives the use of dynamite today. It is often used in large-scale demolitions, but it also used for its original purpose of blasting away rocks in the mining and quarrying industries. Our explosives are also used in road construction, railway development, and in pipelines and infrastructure development. Tips For Selecting Blasting Caps: While people often talk about successful explosions and blasting as an art and a science, at Dyno Nobel we understand that careful and strategic planning, a high level of experience and expertise, and the ability to choose the highest quality components for the job are the most important factors. This includes selecting the right type of explosives, as well as the correct blasting caps and other hardware. Options to Consider: As blasting technology has advanced over the years, the types and the sophistication of blasting and explosives have really changed. Originally the trigger to set the explosion into motion was very basic, and included the use of very simple and rudimentary types of simple fuses, shortly followed by the slightly more sophisticated electric detonators. Now, our blasting and explosive experts often choose the more advanced options of non-electric detonators that use a coated tube through which shock waves travel to the detonation site. This not only prevents accidental misfires due to static electricity in the area or the presence of radio frequency waves, but it also produces a highly reliable detonation in all types of environments. Our experts can also choose from programmable microchip controlled types of electronic detonators. These blasting caps are often the most effective for complex explosions or explosions in a sequence. The programming allows full control and provides the ability to specify the delay and the sequence of the explosions, allowing maximum control over the final outcome. Substrate and Environment: There are many different factors that our experts use when determining the best explosives and blasting caps to use for a given project. We consider the sequence of the explosions and if there needs to be a time delay or if there is the need for test firing before the blast. We will also carefully consider the soil and substrate where the blast will occur, as this will be critical in designing the explosion to achieve the desired result. This includes testing the geology of the area and being diligent in knowing if there are any underground abnormalities in the blast area that may change the pattern of the explosion or the ability of the charge to detonate. Safety is always a concern, which is why the specific type of explosives and detonators have to be carefully considered for the location of the blast. This will be essential to reduce the risk of injury or damage at the time of the blast or as a result of the explosion.

What is an ANFO Explosive? ANFO explosives are commonly used industrial explosives. ANFO stands for ammonium nitrate/fuel oil. Considered one of the most popular blasting agents, the ANFO explosive can be purchased through us at Dyno Nobel in bulk or bagged forms. History of ANFO Explosive: ANFO is composed of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. Ammonium nitrate was first recognized sometime in the late 1860s. It was used as a blasting agent to replace the nitroglycerin in dynamite. Around the 1930s Ammonium nitrate was used in nondynamite explosives. These were known as Nitramon. In 1955; however, fertilizer-grade ammonium nitrate was combined with solid fossil fuels which created the explosive mixture of ANFO. How the ANFO Explosive Works: Alone, ammonium nitrate is one of the most popular fertilizers for farmers. Combined with fuel oil; however, it becomes an excellent explosive mixture. As a leader in safety and practical innovation, we provide the ANFO explosive as a dry, free flowing explosive especially formulated to ensure the appropriate oxygen balance providing optimal energy and sensitivity. Uses for ANFO Explosives: At Dyno Nobel, we sell ANFO explosives under the name DYNOMIX and DYNOMIX WR. Both of these are ANFO explosive substances with a boost. DYNOMIX is a prilled ANFO and is used primarily in quarries, surface mining, construction and underground blasting operations. DYNOMIX WR is a premixed, free-flowing, limited water resistant explosive. It is an ANFO mix in which the prills are coated in order to reduce water penetration and enable detonation in damp conditions. Today, ANFO is recognized as the leading alternative to dynamite.

World record through seam blast achieved with DigiShot Plus
Dyno Nobel has attained a new groundbreaking world record through seam blast in central Queensland using DigiShot Plus electronic initiation system. On Friday 24 April 2015 a through seam blast was fired at a large open cut coal mine using 4,788 DigiShot Plus detonators. This is the largest through seam blast, to date, ever recorded using electronic detonators in a single blast crowning Dyno Nobel with a new world record. Designing and engineering this blast took the skilled expertise and collaboration of the customer’s Drill & Blast Team, DynoConsult, the Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific (DNAP) Electronics Conversion Team and DNAP Operations. Due to the committed partnership this blast was an overwhelming success. Loaded over a 16 day period 4,788 DigiShot Plus detonators were used to initiate 1,729 blast holes on four terraces with zero misfires. Mining efficiency was improved by the ability to combine a number of smaller blast events into a single large blast. The DigiShot Plus electronic platform provided the timing flexibility required for this project. This system is capable of initiating up to 9,600 detonators with a blast duration of 20,000ms in 1ms increments. Through seam blasting is important because it helps to improve mining productivity by making it possible to blast through one or more coal seams during a single blast event. This is beneficial when coal seams are steeply dipping and enables blasts to be designed to a workable grade below the coal seam. Utilizing flexible timing during through seam blasting is crucial because it increases efficiency by confining the coal and minimizing movement and dilution while the interburden below the seam is blasted. Dyno Nobel Fume Reducing Bulk Emulsion Product Trial Success
Dyno Nobel prides itself on developing ground-breaking customer solutions through practical innovation and this has once again been proven, this time in the coalfields, New South Wales in Australia. In certain environments, mines operate in conditions where harmful fumes such as NOx (Nitric Oxide/Nitrogen Dioxide) are at a greater risk of developing during blasting, which is the case for our customers in the New South Wales based coalmines. With the threat of closure by the Environmental Protection Authority for repeated blasts recording high ratings of 3-4 on the fume rating scale, a coal mine in the Hunter Valley, New South Wales turned from their existing explosives supplier to Dyno Nobel for help in developing a new product to minimise fume emissions. And we delivered. Working in partnership with our customer’s teams, The Dyno Nobel R&D team not only delivered a solution with lower fume emissions, but delivered a solution that delivered a fume rating of ZERO. This solution – Titan®9000xero, is a new reduced energy bulk emulsion explosive, designed to assist with post blast fume management. It has been developed in-house by Dyno Nobel’s R&D team as a result of listening to what our customers really need to operate in environmentally challenging conditions that would otherwise be prohibitive. Trial Results Bring Fume Rating to Zero. Titan®9000xero was trialed as part of a controlled Fume Reduction Program in the Hunter Valley region which included 13 blasts performed in high fume potential areas. All 13 of these blasts recorded a rating of zero on our Dyno Nobel Fume Rating Scale. During the trial, The Environmental Protection Agency was able to see the transformation in an area of known high fume potential where prior blasts in the area rated 3–4 on the Fume Rating Scale, to a rating of zero. This was purely down to the client changing their bulk emulsion explosive to Titan®9000xero. Chris Melmeth, Dyno Nobel’s Area Operations Manager for the Hunter Valley reported that “all observers of the blast were very happy and satisfied with the results of the new product”. It was also recognised that removing a fume rating of 3-4 to zero during the trial was a huge success. This practical innovation of Titan®9000xero is not only reducing NOx fumes, but also making our communities and environment a safer place. It is specially designed for use in ground conditions that may be wet, damp, fractured or incompetent. Flexible delivery with these ground conditions is critical, this is why the product can be delivered into dewatered blastholes via auger, or pumped into the bottom of wet blastholes. Titan®9000xero is a fume reducing, water resistant, flexible solution solving the challenges many of our clients are facing – whether in wet conditions or volcanic environments, it can adapted to suit.
